In this blog post, I will be going over the four apps that I use for every day designing, and the reason each app is important.

Timeline Cover Created Using PicsArt Layer Functions
If you’re looking for the reason that PicsArt is one of the top photo editing apps for Android, it’s simple.
It’s free and has more functionality than any other free app on the market. It has its very own social community & challenges weekly that even I participate in.

The reason this app is so important to mobile designers isn’t because it’s free or fun, however. PicsArt offers three main functions of designing: Custom Fonts,  Layers, and the ability to save AND read transparent PNG files.
Other apps have one or the other, but NEVER all three.
To top it off,  PicsArt is absolutely perfect for the beginning designer. They actually include a Facebook Timeline template, sized perfectly for you to create your own cover, either by drawing, or with a pre-made collage.

Where PicsArt stops, Photoshop Touch begins. Photoshop comes with the usual effects one might desire but with the added bonus of being able to save your projects as a layered PSD. This means you can walk away from that design that has 25 different layers after saving, and come back to all 25 layers instead of a flattened image such as a PNG or JPEG.
I would like to see more font options, especially for a paid app, but there are ways around this as my readers will learn later in my blog series.
While Photoshop Touch is pricey at $9.99, free downloads can be found by simply googling “free photoshop touch apk”.
*DBK neither condones nor encourages pirating apps, simply lets readers know that it is possible.
The last two apps worth mentioning are LayerPaint and Clover Paint, both paid apps that allow you to not just save to PSD like Photoshop Touch, but to read PSDs and export them to PNGs. I also rather enjoy the different brushes when drawing in LayerPaint.
*WARNING:Please do not download Clover Paint if you have never worked with an advanced design program before. You may end up frustrated and feeling cheated. Once learned, however, the customization of the program alone makes it money well spent.
